In addition to sperm, the testicles also produce male sex hormones, such as testosterone. testicular cancer: Cancer of the testicle, a common, highly curable form of cancer in young men. testicular cysts: Also known as spermatocele, testicular cysts contain sperm and fluid and usually develop on the upper portion of the epididymis. Testicular cysts do not usually require treatment. testicular torsion: A medical emergency where the spermatic cord twists, cutting off blood flow to the testicles. Without immediate treatment, the testicles can be severely damaged or die. TSE (testicle self-examination): A monthly self-examination during which men visually and physically check the testicles for swelling, growths or other changes that may indicate the presence of testicular cancer. tumor: An abnormal growth of cells. undescended testicles: The testicles develop in the male fetus' abdomen, and usually descend into the scrotum before birth. If the testicles fail to descend, the condition is known medically as cryptorchidism. urethra: The urinary system canal that moves urine out of the bladder. In males, the urethra also transports semen during ejaculation. urologist: A specialist in the treatment of urinary disorders and the male sexual organs. varicocele: A condition in which the scrotum swells due to blood flow obstructions in the spermatic cords. vas deferens: The tube that connects the testicles to the urethra and transports sperm to the ejaculatory duct.
